The short answer

These bodies do different things. The University Grants Commission (UGC) is a statutory body that coordinates and maintains standards in university education and lists the universities it recognises, and it also publishes a list of fake universities. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approves technical education such as engineering, management and related programmes. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) assesses and accredits higher education institutions on quality. The National Board of Accreditation (NBA) accredits programmes, not whole institutions. Recognition, approval and accreditation are separate things, and a good college can show you the right one for each claim.

Admission rules change; confirm with the official notice.

Who does what

Body What it does What it does not do
UGC Coordinates university education and lists recognised universities. Also publishes a list of fake universities. Does not rank colleges or guarantee jobs.
AICTE Approves technical institutions and programmes such as engineering and management. Does not award degrees. Universities do.
NAAC Assesses and accredits higher education institutions on quality. It was set up as an autonomous body of the UGC. Accreditation is about quality, not permission to run.
NBA Accredits specific programmes, for example in engineering, pharmacy, management and architecture. Does not accredit an institution as a whole.
Regulators and their scopes can change. Confirm on each body's website.

Other bodies you may also meet

Many courses have their own council. Ask which one applies.

  • Professional councilsPer profession

For example, the Bar Council of India for law, the Indian Nursing Council for nursing, the Pharmacy Council of India for pharmacy, the Council of Architecture for architecture and the National Medical Commission for medicine.

  • Affiliating universitiesCourse level

Many colleges are affiliated to a university that awards the degree. Check that the affiliation covers the specific course.

  • Statutory teacher-education bodyTeaching

The National Council for Teacher Education recognises teacher-education programmes such as B.Ed.

How to check a college, step by step

  1. Find out which university will award your degree, and check on UGC's lists that the university is recognised.
  2. For technical and management programmes, check approval on the AICTE site for the specific programme and year.
  3. For professional courses, check the relevant council's list.
  4. Ask whether the college or the programme has accreditation, and look it up on NAAC or NBA. Remember that NBA accreditation applies to the programme.
  5. Compare the name, address and course across all documents and websites.
  6. Never pay a large fee until you have verified these yourself.

Common points of confusion

A college may say it is "AICTE approved" when it is approved for a different programme or an earlier year. A university may be recognised while a particular off-campus centre is not. Ask for the specific approval for the exact course and the year of admission.

For a full process, read how to check college recognition. If an offer feels rushed or unusual, how to spot admission scams and fake colleges lists warning signs, and how to choose a college covers the wider decision.

Frequently asked questions

No. Accreditation is an assessment of quality. Recognition and approval are separate.
NBA's policy is to accredit selected technical programmes of an institution, not the institution as a whole.
